Joseph's Notes

"Today, a little girl, just 14 years old was murdered at her own birthday party. Daughter of that Louis Eden. Nina. Circumstances of the death were odd, to say the least. Killed with a screwdriver, murder weapon was gone. Ironically, given how small the town is, the party at the arcade was huge. This made finding anybody who went into that backroom with her incredibly difficult. The real kicker though, was the cameras. Normally, there's a camera set up in that room, according to Eden. We went back and checked the footage, and the moments the murder happened were just... entirely erased. There's no way in hell anybody had time to do that. We were there on the scene almost immediately after she died. Still, shit like this never happens in this town. First time I've seen a little kid's corpse. Her eyes are still burning in my memory."

"Another girl went missing a while ago, something like a week and some days ago? Tia Settle. Little blind girl, even younger than the Eden kid. Might be on track to some kinda serial killer here. The first victim was testing the waters, and now they've figured out how they're doing this...? Something like that. We'll keep looking. Got my own hunches it's somebody within either the Eden or Settle family. It's *always* in the family."

"Guess this is our own incompetence at fault, but the Settle family supposedly hired a private investigator. Someone from out of the town. Liam... something. Forgot his last name. Anyways, he went missing last week. Maybe he got close to... something? Chances are he's put down by now, though. Talked to his agency, and not even a hint of his notes made it back to base. So much for that going anywhere."

"The pattern's changed. Adults, particularly those with a history of smoking or criminal backgrounds have started to drop. It's a weird mix. 3 bodies so far, that we've found. Each of them have had *something* missing from them. It's totally different from what we saw on the Eden kid's body, but... again, being a first kill, it's possible he hadn't 'mastered' his art yet. By something, I mean limbs or organs so far. One was missing their heart, another their arm. "

"Harmony Settle killed herself. Nothing of note there. Understandable given the circumstances."

03/02/1976

"Bodies matching our killer's pattern have turned up outside the town, still remaining in Missouri. We've begun to station officers at the border of the town and mark down who goes in and out."

"We got our first big break. Actual witnesses. Victim was named Frankie. Guy got off of a murder charge on a technicality years ago. Anyway, the murder happened at around dinner time. Frankie and his family were dining, when it happened. Here's the interesting part, there were 4 people at that dinner table, excluding Frankie. 3 of their kids, and his wife. I'll split it up by account A and B, since it can be pretty accurately summarized in these two.

Account A) This was the account given by the wife and the oldest son. In their descriptions, they were eating dinner normally when suddenly the lights went out. The window behind the father broke, and before they knew it they heard a gunshot and the thud of his head slam forward into the table. The killer himself, was wearing a mask. Some gross rendition of a comedy mask. I got the two to sketch it out. The killer simply glanced at the two before leaping over the window and leaving without a word. According to them, it was a rather tall skinny man, but other than that his features were obscured by the mask. Still, it's a start. The other account is stranger, somehow.

Account B) This was given by the two younger daughters. 13 and 15. This account is far more scattered, and seems more like a collective hallucination than anything. Rather than the lights going out, they described an over abundance of light, as if somebody had thrown a flashbang. When they could finally see again, they saw a girl with angel wings and a halo, around their age they noted, holding their still-alive father by the throat. The angel smiled at them both, giggling before simply dragging their father *through* the wall with large loud chains, never to be seen again. According to them, the father screamed for help for a while until his voice was completely squashed.

So, in one far more believable version, the man was killed instantly by a gunshot to the head, which matches the body we found on scene. And in the other version, some... angel from heaven decided to take the father away? Just in case, I had everybody draw a sketch of what they saw. "

"He’s racked up a horrifyingly high kill count now. Neighboring towns, towns across the state, towns in neighboring states. Everytime we get close to him, or figure out how he operates, it’s like he has a middle finger to give us. We nailed it down to a few suspects just a few weeks ago who had left the town at times when murders were happening outside of it, and the bastard somehow managed to tie up each one and throw them in front of the police station. Needless to say, we’ve been thrown off the trail too many times now. Most people in town are locking themselves indoors, only going out when they absolutely have to. It won’t stop snowing. In this specific town in the middle of nowhere, the snow just won’t stop. He’s started leaving notes behind after his kills, but it doesn’t make sense right now. I’ll put it all together after we get all of them. "

"He made his mark again. This time, it was different. The targets resembled something closer to the beginning of the killings. Children. Once again, the attack seemed centralized on the group of kids from the beginning. Charlotte, Ruthy, and Jay were kidnapped from the arcade and brought… somewhere. Questioning has proved so useless it’s not even funny. Charlotte’s constantly slipping in and out of sleep and is always far too medicated to answer any of my questions. Jay talked about once, told me that Ruthy was dead and that it was the masked man who did it. After that, he never clarified the details again.

Ever since Charlotte’s been in the hospital, there’ve been reports all over town of people hearing loud church bells in the middle of the night. Every single night. I’m not sure what the hell we’re dealing with anymore, but I’m in too deep to quit now. I’ll find this man eventually.

We got all the notes from the bodies now. Here.

You have no idea how hard it is to resist the urge to kill you. To know that you need to suffer a multitude more before I can finally watch the light leave your eye. Maybe I was always like this. What does it matter? I only worry what happens after you're dead.

You have no idea how hard I’m trying for you. Even though you kicked me right to my death. I should be furious with you, but I’m being horribly nice. I’m holding him back from you. Day after day, while he visits you every night, I stop him. Nobody else does but me. But even despite all that, you still won’t appreciate me. That’s fine. I’ll make you understand things. You’re my problem, and my problem alone. For hurting you like he did, I’ll slice King up and burn what’s left. Just wait.

I’m not sure what to make of this. I have no idea who King is. Why does it seem like the killer changes tune halfway through his notes? He’s trying to throw us off. Is one of these the real message? I don’t know what to think anymore. I don’t know who he’s talking to.

I won’t give up until he’s in an electric chair. "
